Widget …. What the heck is a Widget and what do they do ?
Within WordPress you can publish a Page or a Post. The areas around the the actual content of you Page or Post content are called Widget Positions. Widgets are used to add additional information on links on the Web Page that is being viewed by the visitor.
When you are reviewing your WordPress Theme you want to check and see how many widget positions it has and if it compliments your layout and design.
Just like anything else the options you have regarding Widgets will vary from Theme to Theme and can play a big part when it comes to utilizing a Responsive Design. How many is needed depends on what kind of website you are creating.
Another feature you want to look at is the level of control you have over the Widgets. Having the ability to have the Widgets visible only on selected pages vs visible on every page is a big plus and allows you to create unique sections and pages on your website. This option can be part of the Theme or can be added with the use of a Plugin.
Plugins can also created different types of Widgets but the number of Widget Positions is controlled by the Theme itself so look a few different Themes and test them out to see how each you presents the Widgets on each device.
Try to avoid using too many Widgets as this can create a page balance issue and leave you with pages with excessive white space forcing your visitors to scroll and wonder if your website is loading properly etc so be sure to review each page of your website.
