WordPress Export Tool
Accessing the Export Tool Screen in WordPress
The WordPress Export Tool is NOT a Backup Tool. This tool is used to move or copy a site and not used for recovery.
Use of the Export Tool is not something you will have much chance to use unless you actually have to move your WordPress Website and when it comes to moving a website there are many better ways to do it but unless you have done a number of times you may not want to try it yourself.
If you do use the Export Tool you will need to be sure that the website you Import the Export file to is setup exactly the same way. The versions and theme should be identical and all the Plugins should be installed and set as well.
If the website you are exporting is large you may have problems with the file size and the time it takes to perform a complete export. Large WordPress sites need to be handled differently.
When you click the button below WordPress will create an XML file for you to save to your computer.
This format, which we call WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR, will contain your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags.
Once you’ve saved the download file, you can use the Import function in another WordPress installation to import the content from this site.
Be warned that using this method may not get everything, just the information you see on the options of the Export Tool Screen.
Items such as Widgets you will have to recreate on the new website.
Now that you have logged in to your WordPress site and reviewed the Export Tool Screen what do you do next?
